A Newport Songbook celebrates both the city’s cultural heritage and the artists who shaped it. The program brings Newport’s musical past to life through the works once heard in its opera houses, theatres, churches, and salons. Drawing from 19th century performances and local composers, the first half revisits music performed in Newport during the vibrant 19th century musical era. Enjoy music that was performed at the Newport Casino Theatre and music performed by the famed Germania Musical Society during their summer residence in Newport. The second half of the program includes music of composers from the Astor, Wetmore, and Oelrichs families, as well as music celebrating Ida Lewis, the “Heroine of Newport.”
